Leak Detection Guide

7 Signs of a Hidden Water Leak in Your Alhambra Home

A hidden leak rarely announces itself with a puddle. It shows up as a pattern of small clues — a bill, a sound, a warm patch of floor — that are easy to dismiss one by one. Here are the seven signs that, especially in combination, justify a proper meter test.

1. Your water bill rises without a reason

If your usage habits have not changed — no guests, no new irrigation, no pool fill — but the bill climbs month after month, water is going somewhere. Compare with the same month last year to rule out seasonal watering.

2. The meter moves when no water is running

This is the closest thing to proof. Note the meter reading, avoid using water for two hours (or check first thing before any use), and read it again. Movement means water is leaving the system somewhere.

3. Warm spots on the floor

A warm or hot patch on a hard floor, especially in a line or one area, is a classic sign of a hot-water slab leak beneath it. Thermal imaging can map the pattern quickly.

4. Sounds of running water

Hissing, trickling or running-water sounds with every tap off mean water is moving through a pipe — or out of it. Follow the sound; it often points roughly toward the problem.

5. Damp, stains and musty smells

Stains that grow, bubbling paint, soft plaster and persistent musty smells in one place all indicate moisture where it should not be. Remember the visible damage is not always above the leak itself.

6. Water pressure drops

A leak diverts water before it reaches your fixtures. A noticeable, system-wide pressure drop alongside other signs strengthens the case — though pressure alone can have other causes.

7. Wet or unusually green patches outdoors

A soggy area, an unusually lush strip of lawn, or wet soil in dry weather along the line from meter to house points to an underground service-line leak — after irrigation has been ruled out.

What to do next

Run the meter test. If it confirms movement, the leak is real and the next step is isolation — hot or cold, inside or outside — followed by pinpointing with acoustic, thermal or tracer-gas methods. That sequence is what keeps any later repair small.

  • Turn off all water-using appliances before the test
  • Check toilets for silent leaks (a common false suspect)
  • Note whether the house shut-off stops the meter — that separates in-home from service-line leaks

Frequently asked questions

One sign on its own — should I worry?
A single sign has other explanations. Two or more together, or a positive meter test, are what justify a professional investigation.
Can a toilet really move the meter?
Yes. A silently running toilet is one of the most common causes of meter movement and high bills, which is why fixtures are checked before any pipe is blamed.
