Leak Detection Guide

Water Bill Suddenly High? Is a Hidden Leak the Cause?

A suddenly high water bill is one of the most common reasons people call us — and a hidden leak is only one of several possible causes. This guide works through the checks in the right order, so you can separate a leak from a billing, irrigation or fixture problem before paying for anything.

First, rule out the ordinary explanations

Bills rise for mundane reasons: guests, extra laundry, garden watering in a hot spell, a pool refill, or a longer billing period. Compare the usage figure (not just the cost) with the same period last year, and check whether a rate change or estimated reading is involved.

  • More irrigation days or longer run times
  • A hose or tap left running outdoors
  • New occupants or a working-from-home change
  • A pool or spa refill

Check the fixtures that waste water silently

A running toilet can waste a remarkable amount of water without making much noise. Put food colouring in the cistern and wait 15 minutes without flushing — colour in the bowl means the toilet is passing water. Also check dripping taps, the water heater's relief valve, and irrigation valves that may be stuck partly open.

Do the meter test

With all water off — including irrigation and ice-makers — record the meter, wait two hours (overnight is ideal), and record it again. Any change confirms water is leaving the system. Then close the house shut-off: if the meter still moves, the loss is between meter and house, or in irrigation; if it stops, the loss is inside.

Other causes beyond leaks

Not every confirmed loss is a pipe leak. A faulty irrigation controller, a stuck softener regenerating repeatedly, or a humidifier fault can all consume water steadily. The isolation process — shutting systems off one by one while watching the meter — identifies which system is responsible before any pipe is investigated.

When to call a professional

Call when the meter test confirms a loss, fixtures and irrigation check out, and the loss cannot be attributed to a specific system. At that point, pressure testing isolates the section and acoustic or tracer-gas methods pinpoint it. Bring your last few bills — the pattern over time genuinely helps the investigation.

Frequently asked questions

How high is 'suddenly high'?
There is no universal threshold. A jump that cannot be explained by season, occupants or watering — especially two bills in a row — is worth the meter test, which costs nothing.
My bill doubled but the meter test shows nothing — what now?
Then a continuous leak is unlikely. Look at intermittent causes: irrigation schedules, a toilet that only runs occasionally, or an estimated previous bill correcting itself. A data pattern beats a single reading.
