Leak Detection Guide

How to Identify a Possible Underground Water Line Leak

The line from your meter to your house is out of sight, and its leaks are masters of disguise — they imitate irrigation problems, drainage problems and 'just a wet winter'. These are the signs that point specifically at the buried service line, and the checks that separate it from its imitators.

The outdoor signs

Look for a patch of ground that stays wet in dry weather, a strip of grass noticeably greener than its surroundings along a straight line from meter to house, soft or sinking soil, and water sounds near the meter. One sign alone is suggestive; a line-shaped pattern is stronger evidence.

The indoor signs

A rising bill with no change in habits, a meter that moves with all indoor water off, and reduced pressure or flow throughout the house all fit a service-line leak — the water is being lost before it ever reaches a tap.

Rule out irrigation first

Sprinkler systems leak too, and far more often. Shut irrigation off at its dedicated valve and repeat the meter test. If the meter stops, the loss is in irrigation. If it continues with irrigation and house both isolated, the service line between them is the remaining suspect.

  • Close the irrigation isolation valve
  • Close the house shut-off valve
  • Watch the meter after each step — the step that stops it names the system

How professionals pinpoint it

Once the service line is confirmed as the leaking system, its route is traced and the leak is pinpointed from the surface — acoustic listening or correlation, or tracer gas for deep or quiet lines. The marked point is where a repair dig happens, once, rather than a trench of exploration.

Frequently asked questions

Can an underground leak damage the house?
Over time, yes — escaping water can erode soil, undermine paving and foundations, and keep ground against the building wet. It also wastes a significant volume of water, which is why bills climb.
The wet patch is nowhere near the meter line — can it still be the service line?
Water travels through soil and along trenches, so the surface wet spot can sit away from the leak itself. That is exactly why pinpointing uses sound or gas along the traced route, not the wettest patch.
