Water Stain on the Ceiling or Wall? How to Trace It to the Source

A stain tells you water arrived — not where it came from, when, or whether it is still coming. Tracing it properly means reading the pattern, the timing and the moisture levels, because the three usual suspects — plumbing, roof and condensation — need entirely different repairs.

The timing trick

Note when the stain grows. Growth after showers, baths or laundry points to plumbing (often a drain or a fixture seal rather than a supply pipe). Growth after rain points upward, to the roof or flashing. Slow growth in humid weather with no rain and no water use suggests condensation. Timing alone solves a surprising share of stain mysteries.

  • Worse after bathroom use → plumbing or fixture seal
  • Worse after rain → roof, flashing or exterior wall
  • Steady in humid weather → condensation

Map the moisture, not just the stain

The brown outline shows where water has been, not where it is now or where it entered. Moisture readings taken across and beyond the stain show the wet area's true shape — and its highest point or most saturated area is usually closer to the source than the stain's centre.

Remember: water travels

Water runs along joists, pipes and the top of ceiling boards before it finds a way through. The leak can be a metre or more from the stain, uphill along a joist. Opening the ceiling directly under the stain, without tracing, regularly opens the wrong hole.

When to call, and what happens

Call when the stain is growing, returns after drying, or its timing pattern is unclear. A professional trace combines moisture mapping, thermal imaging and fixture isolation tests, and ends with either an identified source or a stated most-likely source with the confirming step explained.

Frequently asked questions

The stain dried out — is the problem gone?
Not necessarily. Intermittent leaks (a shower drain, rain-driven entry) dry between events. If the stain reappears with the same trigger, the source is still active.
Can I just paint over it?
Paint hides the evidence, not the water. If the source is active, the stain returns and the material keeps deteriorating underneath. Trace first, repair, confirm it stays dry — then paint.
