Leak Detection Guide

What a Sewer Camera Inspection Can Reveal (and What It Can't)

A sewer camera is the most honest tool in drain work: instead of opinions about your line, you get pictures. But it is not magic, and knowing its limits is as useful as knowing its strengths — especially before paying for one, or for a repair based on one.

What the camera shows clearly

Root intrusion at joints, cracks and fractures, offset or separated joints, corrosion and deterioration in cast iron, sagging sections holding water (bellies), grease and scale build-up, and foreign objects. Each finding is recorded with its distance from the access point.

  • Roots entering through joints
  • Cracked, broken or offset pipe
  • Bellies (sags) that hold water and solids
  • Blockages and build-up

What it cannot do

A camera cannot see through a completely blocked or collapsed section — it stops there. It cannot inspect pressurised water supply lines at all; those need acoustic, pressure or tracer-gas methods. It sees the inside of the pipe, not the soil around it, and a clean-looking pipe can still have a leaking joint that only shows under flow conditions. Small branch lines with tight traps may also be inaccessible.

When an inspection is worth it

Recurring blockages are the strongest case: clearing the same line repeatedly without knowing why is money spent blind. Also worthwhile: before buying an older home, before any quoted line replacement (verify the evidence), and to assess relining or spot-repair candidacy.

Getting the most from an inspection

Ask for the footage or a written summary with distances, and for surface locating of any defect that may need repair. A defect 'somewhere in the line' is only half an answer; a marked position on the ground is the usable version.

Frequently asked questions

Will the camera find why my drain smells?
Often — a belly holding waste, a cracked vent-side joint or build-up can all be visible. Some odour causes are above the line (dry traps, venting), which the inspection process also considers.
Do I need a camera inspection before relining?
Yes — relining candidacy is decided by camera evidence. Damage type, sags, collapses and connections all determine whether a liner is appropriate.
